These are constructed usually of timber and they're normally two-storied and loopholed for firing. Very often they are a detached small Fort used for controlling strategic points, but there are some examples where they are used at strategic points within a fortification particularly one that is defended by wooden Palisades (such as Fort Meigs in Ohio, USA).
