This is a stockade or timber wall that is loopholed. It is made with two faces forming a salient angle at the gorge of a work to serve as a re-trenchment or to cover the staircase with a ditch in front, and sometimes with a half roof sloping toward the rear. This is done to protect the defenders from shelling and related splinters.
