"Indeed, criminals were usually given a choice between prison and an enlistment in the Army, often in a battalion destined for the deadly climate of the West Indies. Some regiments were allowed to recruit in gaols. The term of service was for the three years, which could be extended until the end of the war, at the option of the Crown."
