"Sunday. Our Brigade on duty, we all off the roster. A severe skirmish from 1 p.m. till near 7, the enemy having made a desperate attempt to force our new battery which annoys at them greatly, a tremendous rain and thunderstorm broke over the combatants about 5 (PM) and tended to cool both parties. They were repulsed. The rain lasted all night, we lucky to be under shelter. The Casualties were about 20. Lt. Marsh, a fine young man, was killed.
Captain Jobling and Lt. Kelly, 104th (Regiment), joined us-a most ridiculous blunder at our head quarters. We are Eight officers to Eighteen men, the debris of our two flank companies, four officers having been sent up, quite out of all place and time."
