"The 104th (Regiment) ordered to do duty with the Engineer department. A deserter reported that 40 men were killed or wounded in the Fort (Erie) yesterday. On the reserve picquet last night, only a few shots fired. Some brought on ourselves by Basden, Brown and I telling stories in turn which made us, men and all, laugh so loud that the Fort (Erie) fired at us and the Field Officer of the night came up and gave us a precious wigging for risking the mens' lives unnecessarily."
